There’s a reason why online advertising increases by 140 percent over the holidays: this time of year has the highest potential for conversions. However, you’ll be missing out on countless opportunities if you’re unaware what consumers are likely to do this year.

Holiday Marketing: Shopping Trends

Let’s start with some social stats. Did you know that 68 percent of shoppers are turning to YouTube suggestions for what to buy? You need to be taking advantage of video this year to reach these users.

Instagram is also playing a critical role. Not only has the number of business increased by 71 percent since last year, consumers are being more influenced by the content they see on the platform. For instance, 58 percent of female consumers in the 13-to-22 age group want gifts that will look good on Instagram. How a gift looks may also influence what they buy for other people.

In fact, 25 percent of Gen Z consumers also prefer to purchase using photos. Your visual content better be mobile friendly, as 50 percent fo Gen Z shoppers will be purchasing exclusively with their phones.

Still, though, online stores remain the most visited-places to purchase gifts. Even when consumers visit the right store, more than 25 percent decide to purchase online.

In both your online stores and on social, you need to be using chatbots. Consumers are now turning to chatbots for customer service. More than half of consumers (of all ages) say that they prefer to message businesses rather than call. Furthermore, the open rate for chatbot messages is astounding — 75 percent within the first hour alone.

Another thing to do is optimize your content for voice search. Voice shopping will account for 3 percent of holiday sales this year.

All these stats are just the start. You’ll find more more key insights on the infographic.
